Overview
Sweden’s mineral tenure system is governed by the Minerals Act (1991:45) and administered by the Mining Inspectorate of Sweden (Bergsstaten), which operates under the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU). The system is application-based and grants exclusive rights to explore and develop designated concession minerals, including most metallic and strategic minerals.
Sweden is one of Europe’s leading mining jurisdictions and is a major producer of iron ore, particularly from northern Sweden (Kiruna and Malmberget). The country also produces base and precious metals such as copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, and has growing exploration activity focused on battery and critical minerals, including nickel, cobalt, graphite, and rare earth elements.
