Overview
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers federal mining claims and sites for locatable minerals on public-domain federal mineral estate under the General Mining Law of 1872, as amended. Separate federal regimes apply to leasable minerals such as coal, oil and gas, and to saleable mineral materials.
State law may add location, monument and county-recording requirements. A claimant should check both BLM and the relevant state and county requirements before locating or maintaining a claim.
